Elderly people have the right to be happy but sometimes families don’t have enough time to take care of them so there are places named senior living where they can live better. In my country, these places are not nice so I was afraid to visit one in US but I encouraged myself and I went volunteering to Sunrise with CSE.First, we were received by the activities and volunteer coordinator and she told us about their mission, principles of service and core values. Also she gave us some tips about volunteering such as smile and sitting if the person we are talking with is in a wheelchair. Also, she recommended same topics to talk about.Second, we went to the place, I chose the reminder sector where there are people with memories issues, some of them with Alzheimer's. When we showed up they were listening to music and when they saw us they smiled so we started to talk with them. I talked with Elen, Lilian and Jacob. All of them were so nice, but I will focus on Jacob. Jacob is a 90 years old man who was born in Boston. I asked him “what do you want to talk about?” and he answered me: “I prefer dancing with you” So we danced. He and the women told me about their family and what they do in this place. Seniors Living in US are better than Argentina because they give you the opportunity to choose what do you want to do and how to live, so it was a nice experience and I hope one day the retirement home will be like this in my country.
REFLECTIVE ESSAY By Diego Leyes (Venezuela)
Sometimes you might lose your essence as a human because you are always busy in your job, studies, family or friends. Maybe you begin to live as a cloud where you don’t care or you’re not worried about problems of another people it’s not because you don’t want to, it’s due to your busy time. The last Tuesday, our school planned going to a retirement place where we could share time with people that need companionship. I’d like to say that is such a nice place, the staff is friendly and they are caring very good to these people. I could talk with an awesome woman called Mrs. Roberta. She was so lucid that she could tell me her story about her family. She got married when she was seventeen years old, she is Jewish and she has triplets granddaughters. I liked so much talking to her about my family and my country, and she was happy listening to me. Finally, I recommend that students go to these kinds of places, you really will enjoy sharing time with these people and you’ll help them t get a happy time. .
